Abstract

With the emergence of rush orders for contract manufacturing in the first quarter of 2009, some brand-name vendors and contract manufacturers have revised their forecasts for notebook PC demand in full-year 2009. It is projected that end-market demand in North America and China will pick up, contrary to industry forecasts at the beginning of the year. However, as some component makers were reserved about demand rebound and the resumption of production had to take three to six months, problems of component shortage bore on the growth momentum of notebook PC shipments in May. At the same time, the rollout of some new products, such as CULV (Consumer Ultra Low Voltage) platform products, was also affected by technological glitches and poor yield rates. These shipment hindrances were not solved until June. Overall, it is estimated that greater Chinese notebook PC shipment volume reached approximately 27.3 million units in the second quarter of 2009, representing a year-on-year growth rate of around 2.8%.
